Oktober 2019 - November 2019Tomoko Kawai is a Japanese artist based in Berlin.
Kawai focuses her artistic research on humans through exploratory activities in cultural history, philosophy and aesthetics, based on the sensations and experience that she gains through photography, including all kinds of physical activity and mobility. Recent exhibitions include Japanese Contemporary photography Vol.15-Things so Faint but Real (Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, Japan,2018), On the Origin of Springs (Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, 2018) and Detour (Mori-Ogai-Gedenkstaette Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Berlin, 2018). Artist-in-residence in the international studio program (Künstlerhaus Bethanien,Berlin, 2017-18). Grant recipient (Japanese Government Overseas Research Program, 2016-2017).
During my residency at Q21, I will work on my project by exploring The Scenery of Life, through photographs, film, and research materials, while weaving in the sensations and experience from my artistic practice in the act of photography. I also intend to gain insights in the coexistence of organisms through many shifting viewpoints, which are ultimately derived from Japanese animism.
