Andrea Palašti works across artistic and curatorial boundaries that experiments with archives and methodologies - concentrating on issues of cultural geography, history and the everyday life. Through her work, she questions the memory, subjectivity and identity, as well as the responsibilities of history, which then plays an important role in knowledge exchange. Projektinfo

Guided by an interest in researching institutional picture collections, I am currently engaged in re-contextualising one part of the picture archive formed by a former Schönbrunn Zoo director Otto Antonius (dir. 1925-1945), which is today kept in the Historical Documentation Center of the Schönbrunn Zoo. My object of interest during the Q21 residency is to further develop the research about the orangutan Emil - a former pet of a Serbian civil servant, who had to sell him to the Schönbrunn Zoo because of a transfer in his service. Between 1927 and 1938, Emil was a media star and a favorite attraction in the Schönbrunn Zoo - until he became so obese and so depressed that he refused every contact (Kleine Volks-Zeitung, January 26, 1938). By exploring Emile's history, as well as his life after death in different cultural and scientific institutions, I would like to open up different questions around Zoos as establishments and to underline the idea of ”The Human Zoo” described by Desmond Morris (1969), who proposed that the unnatural behavior of animals in zoos could help us understand, accept, and overcome the stresses that life in consumer societies brings. I plan to dedicate my time at the Q21 residency  to edit video and photographic materials, and also to research at the Zoological Collection at the University of Vienna and the Newspaper reading room of the Austrian National Library, in order to identify his remaining body parts, and where possible arrange for documents, photographs or digital copies of the found materials.

Additionally, the first two weeks at the Q21 will be spent on mounting up a new research project which was realized in 2018 for the exhibition  "ALLE ANTRETEN! ES WIRD GEKNIPST!" Private Fotografie in Österreich 1930-1950, curated by Herbert Justnik and Friedrich Tietjen and supported by kültüř gemma!  The public presentation of the research is scheduled to open on January 17, 2019 at Volkskundemuseum in Vienna.
