Distilling the Sky is an artistic research project on air quality and air pollution that is severely deteriorating in many cities around the world. The project aims to communicate environmental science and pollution research to the larger public as well as creating a platform for increasing public awareness. Formerly relegated to developing countries, air pollution is now a global problem effecting innumerable urban settlements. One notorious example is Beijing where air pollution reached such alarming levels that the effects of pollution are comparable to that of a nuclear winter . As human beings 1 we love the open sky.
It is the sun, our star, that lights up the sky and we call it the day. When the sun is gone, it is the moon and the stars and we call it the night. In cities like Beijing, we lost the sun, and the stars. ! For this project, I would like to design a large scale mechanism or a group of architectural elements that can receive and “condense” polluted air into liquid form. From air to liquid, the result of Distilling the Sky is highly condensed, extremely thick, highly precious drops of air pollution, delicately contained in a custom designed glass vessel.
