Production of an 8-channel sound work to be played in the TONSPUR_passage at MQ Vienna
"Kraków to Venice in 12 hours" maps a journey across Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria and Slovenia to Italy, visiting Krakow, Katowice, Bielsko-Biala, Ostrava, Brno, Bratislava, Vienna, Graz, Maribor, Ljubljana, Trieste and Venice. The project captures the unique sonic identities of the 12 towns and cities, searching for similarities, connections and differences and acting as a personal and subjective audio travel guide.
The structure of a 12 hour clock forms the basis of the multichannel sound installation. The field recordings of each place were taken within a particular hour of the day – as the day progresses the journey progresses along with it.
I was part of the Artist-in-Residence programme at the MuseumsQuartier in July 2013. Georg Weckwerth curator of TONSPUR invited me to present “Kraków to Venice in 12 hours” sound piece in TONSPUR_passage.
Kraków to Venice in 12 hours is an 8 channel, 12 hour long sound piece and installation, which maps a journey across Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria and Slovenia to Italy, visiting Krakow, Katowice, Bielsko-Biala, Ostrava, Brno, Bratislava, Vienna, Graz, Maribor, Ljubljana, Trieste and Venice. The project attempts to captures the unique sonic identities of the 12 cities travelled through, searching for similarities and differences. It acts as a personal and subjective audio travel guide and a clock for the journey, mapping the movement through geographical locations over the passage of time.
During my stay at q21/MQ studios I was working on the final editing for the 8-channel, 12 hours composition. The ability to test the piece on location, in a public space, was an important part of the creative process. The residency in quatier21 also provided me with a great opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with other artists as well as to enjoy the vibrant artistic scene of Vienna during a splendid summer.
