During my residency time at MQ I worked on my project “9th March 1983” (working title). It is the first part of an ongoing series of works exploring heroism. It recounts the story about the assassination of the Turkish ambassador Galip Balkar and the murder of Željko Milivojević that took place in Belgrade on 9th March, 1983. The project concentrates on the character of Željko Milivojević, who has been declared a national hero, a fact that is now completely forgotten. The project is still not finished, because it is archive based and it involves a lot of research, during my stay at MQ, I mostly worked on organizing newspaper articles on the subject that I have collected over time and edited video footage I previously made in Belgrade.
I find it always good for artists to spend time and exchange ideas and experiences with each other, this was also the case at MQ where I have met other Artists-in-Residence. I would have wished that MQ did more on creating an active link between the Artists-in-Residence and Vienna art scene (artists, curators, producers...) or maybe organize artist-talks or presentations so that we could get a chance to present our work to the above mentioned. Then again the peace offered by the residency is something that I really appreciated, it was a pleasure to have time and being able to concentrate only on the work.
I would like to especially thank Gülsen Bal and Walter Seidl for their help during my stay and the MQ for hosting me.
