The film chronicles Ulay, a pioneering conceptual artist from Amsterdam, throughout a transformative year. Renowned for his avant-garde contributions to body art, performance art, and polaroid art, Ulay's collaboration with Marina Abramović stands as a pinnacle in his career. Relocating to Ljubljana in 2009, Ulay's life took an unexpected turn upon his cancer diagnosis, altering the trajectory of the planned film. Despite the setback, filming commenced in November 2011 at the Ljubljana Institute of Oncology amidst his chemotherapy sessions. As Ulay's health improved marginally, he embarked on a poignant journey to reconnect with friends worldwide, culminating in Berlin, New York, and his beloved Amsterdam, all meticulously captured by the camera. Viewing his illness as his most significant project, the film aptly titled "Project: Cancer" encapsulates Ulay's resilience and artistic ethos.
Director Damjan Kozole reflects on the film's inception amidst Ulay's health battle, highlighting their determination to capture his journey authentically. Filming commenced in November 2011, portraying Ulay's struggle and resilience during chemotherapy sessions. From Ljubljana to Berlin's premiere of Marina Abramović's film, to New York for a poignant series of Polaroids, and finally to Amsterdam, the camera encapsulated Ulay's odyssey until November 2012. Throughout Ulay's career, the exploration of sexual identity and the human body remained central. In this film, his body takes precedence, embodying the trials and triumphs of his artistic evolution.
