STUDIO MEDIUM
Studio Medium is an apparel and textile design practice based in New Delhi. Their work and multidisciplinary approach reside on the crossroads of art, design, and fine craftsmanship. The spirit of experimentation and a sense of playfulness is what defines the studio’s DNA. Studio Medium work with traditional Indian craft techniques to create contemporary textiles and garments in natural dyes and azo free dyes. Along with that they work with various Japanese hand dyeing techniques like Arashi Shibori & Nui Shibori to make textiles & artworks.
The studio was set up in 2016 by textile artist and apparel designer Riddhi Jain, an alumna of the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. Her works have been showcased nationally and internationally, the most recent one being at the World Shibori Symposium in Arimatsu, Japan.
At the Vienna Fashion Week this year, they propose to showcase a very important collection that concerns the times we live in. The collections Re and Borrow are a part of the sustainability initiative of the studio.
About the collection
Their collections ; Re and ‘bor(r)o(w) preserves and repurposes the by-products of our textile processes to relook at what is considered as ‘waste’ and to create intriguing textile art and garments. It is a collection that has been explored through necessity. The idea of extending the life of an object transcends cultures – patching, quilting, piecing and bringing together borrowed bits may have different names (Kantha in South Asia, Sashiko in Northern Japan) but the intent to preserve beauty remains timeless.
From dresses to outerwear, every garment has been crafted with borrowed stories that map the memory of unused fabric and discarded threads passed down from previous collections. This memory, so unique to each piece, would otherwise go undocumented. Just as minds choose to remember narratives and recreate the boundaries of reality, every garment borrows from earlier pieces and collections but now has its own imprints and a special tale to tell.
Riddhi Jain is Q21 Artist-in-Residence at MuseumsQuartier Wien in September 2022.
PITOUR
With PITOUR, Maria Oberfrank has established a label that stands for a finely balanced sense between current zeitgeist and discreet purist elegance for women and men. A special highlight are the details always executed with experimental ingenuity. Another PITOUR trademark is the play with asymmetry and the exploration of multiple wearing options, as well as the choice of unusual fabrics and color combinations. Thus, supposedly simple cuts turn again and again towards glamour, luxury or charming irony, resulting in a skilful combination of Central European sobriety and a pinch of exuberance. Thus, Pitour delivers a perfect snapshot. In addition to clothing, the label also includes accessories as well as jewelry.
PITOUR is available in the store & showroom Combinat, founded by Maria Oberfrank in 2005, in the MuseumsQuartier Vienna, which is unique due to its special ambience as a former imperial and royal saddle room. Sattelkammer with its historical charm is worth a visit.
The former student of J.C. de Castelbajac, Vivienne Westwood, Marc Bohan and Helmut Lang at the University of Applied Arts/Vienna commuted and worked for several years in Sao Paulo/Brazil with the fashion brand M X M, then in Los Angeles. She founded the MQ VIENNA FASHION WEEK in 2009 with her partners from creative headz.
About the collection A/W 22 – FROZEN ENERGY
PITOUR skillfully sets limits to the indomitable winter. The designs follow a causal, strict line and look like architecture on the body. Each part invites individual composition.
Circles as metaphors are the key pieces and the formal geometric components of the collection. Circle segments are variably adapted to the body and meet the requirements. Decidedly used contrasts and applications play with the effect and rebel against winter. Monochomatic colors in all their gradations form the calming component.
The colors are somberly luminous, a shadow lies over every yellow and red, the blues play between midnight, cool steel blue and firn ice, nude is combined with black. Collars form in several layers optimal protection against nature, can be variably folded and onion-shaped.
For the ball season Maria Oberfrank has developed a new collection together with the Viennese textile designer Rosa Gianesin, whose world of patterns delves into the world of the Fin de Siècle and the Viennese Secession and traces the savoir vivre of a bygone era. Quotes from this era are reflected in the Pret-a-porter collection and accompany us as allegories in the here and now.
