According to a German saying, eating brings people together. This is true. But: food may divide as well. Because it has long been more than a shared human basic need to sustain life. What ends up in the shopping basket and on the plate – or not – is considered an expression, at times a more conscious one than at others, of belonging to a social group, class or even of a shared political attitude.

"Von der Hand in den Mund (Hand to Mouth)" is a performative dinner, an edible installation, a sensuous discourse about taste and class. In a set-up inspired by the food and catering industries’ cosmos of commodities, Julischka Stengele creates a space of activity staging various dishes, the sampling of them, and a reflection on our sense of taste. Materialities, smells, aromas, colours and shapes combine with performative elements to create an aesthetic experience that involves all the senses. Ranging from guilty pleasure to poor people’s food, comestibles are examined in their role as status symbols and in creating a sense of identity.
