A shinning glossy surface appears to reflect the commodities, aspirations and failures embedded in our relation with consumerism aesthetics. A relationship manifested like a shining mirror and its own reflection, chasing a never given but mostly promised completeness. Valença Vaz‘ exhibition carries dialectics exploring a possible renegotiation between materiality and the systems that shape our lives (labor, classes, consumption modes), while considering a potential for reimagining the structures that produce these systems. Ghostlike and sterile, „Delusions“ feels empty although full field artefacts, positioning the quotidian within a poetic critic, converting everyday objects into models and reintegrating them into systems of production and display, finally performing art’s complicity in the economies it critiques.
Like the objects we physically and metaphorically grasp, layered ideologies, and power structures, Valenca Vaz ́s works may lead to rethink established systems of value and meaning, accessibility and exclusivity. Animated models linked to public transportation are transformed into emblems for movement, while transit-spaces become metaphors for hope.
