Alexander’s Feast
DANCE/PERFORMANCE/MUSIC
Cantata in Two Parts
Libretto by Newburgh Hamilton after John Dryden
Since it was founded in 1980, the King’s Consort has established itself as one of the most influential exponents of historically informed performance practice. In Vienna the musicians now celebrate the power of music with Handel’s "Alexander’s Feast". The ode to Saint Cecilia, patron saint of music, was written in 1736 and describes a banquet held by Alexander the Great at which jubilation at the victories in battle ultimately gives way to delight in the power of music. Inspired by an ode by the English poet John Dryden, Handel does the subject matter justice by pulling out all the stops, from dramatic choral pieces to gentle flute solos.
