September 2024 - October 2024Before Hajnalka Tulisz began her studies at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in Budapest, she received training in photography in Székesfehérvár. In 2014, the artist obtained her master's degree in intermedia art. Two years later, she was accepted for a one-year postgraduate programme in France at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts de Lyon. Tulisz has also taken part in various international residencies, such as Strasbourg, France (Budapest Gallery scholarship, 2022), Chisinau, Moldova (Oberliht, 2015) and 2016 at the Summer Academy, Salzburg (Erste Foundation scholarship). She is a PhD student in Budapest since 2019.
In her art, Hajnalka Tulisz deals with the question of objects and their form, with object-like elements of immaterial things such as language and the mental world.
The artist realised that many objects can be viewed in their pure form, detached from their original context. In this state, they appear anthropomorphised to her and thus take on a special meaning.
During a four-month residency in Cluj-Napoca, she collected photos of ‘patchwork’ fences that stood out due to their geometric shapes and the layering of materials. The artist suspects that these kinds of fences and abandoned objects are more common in the less well-kept cities of Eastern Europe, but she has not yet made such a discovery in Vienna.
During her residency at MQ, she will therefore use her collection as the basis for new artworks. Large textile objects inspired by the improvised fences are planned, as well as paintings and drawings based on these impressions.
