»Geschrieben wie das Christkind, ausgesprochen wie die Droge.« (– FLUX FM, 2021)
Try to label CHRISTL [she/they], you won't succeed: CHRISTL is an artist who cannot be framed. Be it audiovisual, visual works or poetry - CHRISTL combines all of these into a perfect whole. CHRISTL are beyond borders, beyond gender & beyond medium: they combine experimental soundscapes and energetic, melancholic songs with their strong, sometimes fragile voice. CHRISTL is uncompromising, critical & confrontational. Her art focuses on stories, emotions or injustice. CHRISTL creates spaces in which anger and love, fragility and strength are equally entitled to be felt and heard and wants to unite what initially seems ambivalent in her work in an ironic way. Colours, forms and words give her the opportunity to unmask herself and others and to uncompromisingly create the art with which she is able to analyse, criticise and sometimes also romanticise her environment.
With the release of her single ‘Object Of Desire’, in which CHRISTL expresses her own experiences of sexual harassment, she has not only caused a stir on the streets of Vienna with an activist art campaign against sexual harassment, but also immediately in the media (interviews and portraits in the Standard and Kurier followed, among others). The growing interest in the versatile young artist CHRISTL was also reflected, for example, in invitations to a residency of sorts in Hamburg and performances on ORF1 at the Austrian Amadeus Music Awards 2021, at popfest 2021 and at the TEDTalks taking place in Vienna in 2022. Her debut EP ‘A Room For Her Own’ collects all the songs she has already known to date, but also reveals new musical facets.
The debut is a chronicle of CHRISTL's creative work from the previous year and traces her self-discovery process as an artist: ‘The EP is a conclusion and a beginning for me. In the process, I have developed an enormous amount of artistic self-confidence, sharpened my vision and understood how art works for me.’
In 2022, CHRISTL toured Austria, played at festivals (Impulstanz Festival, Rock Im Dorf, Free Tree Open Air, Acoustic Lakeside, Waves Vienna) and opened the show for Tocotronic at their open air concert in the Arena Wien. At the same time, CHRISTL is working on her first album; true to her holistic artistic approach, this musical release will accompany her first book ‘Ich glaub ich hasse mich’, which was published by Haymon Verlag in September 2023.
