From A ...as in Abba to Z ...as in Peter Zumthor - for his contribution to the “eSeL ABC” exhibition series in the eSeL REZEPTION , artist Tex Rubinowitz provides a list of prominent and relevant artist names - across all disciplines and generations.
The series of 26 minimalist drawings of the letters of the alphabet shows how outstanding artists from all disciplines and markets, beyond their canonization, have a multi-layered effect on society and each individual.
As an individual universe of artistic points of reference, influences and/or role models, this list can also be read as an inverse self-portrait of the multi-talented Tex Rubinowitz, who is primarily known as a drawer.
Through his weekly drawings for Falter and other publications (Titanic etc.), Tex Rubinowitz is known throughout Vienna and the world. As an author, Rubinowitz delivers trenchant book projects, from novels to travelogues and joke books to all conceivable hybrid forms. Tex's text and lecture won the prestigious Ingeborg Bachmann Literature Prize in Klagenfurt in 2014 (where he continues to spin records as a DJ in the program accompanying the reading competition). He is also active as a musician in various band formations (including “Die Mäuse”). He last appeared as an actor in May 2024 for “Kafka's Franz. The Reunion” with the ‘Sparverein Die Unzertrennlichen’ on stage at the Rabenhof. Embroidered text pictures were last exhibited as part of a solo exhibition at Galerie Rauminhalt Harald Bichler. Tex Rubinowitz is currently working as “Stadtschreiber von Wels” (and in the Oberösterreichische Nachrichten).
With his minimalist, supposedly ephemeral forms, Rubinowitz delivers subtle, contemporary formats for the enjoyment of art in the midst of everyday life. Accordingly, the artist will also be appearing as a “mobile DJ sculpture” at various locations in the MuseumsQuartier during the exhibition and, as a further facet of his wide-ranging interests, will be giving musical “doo-wop lectures” on a small record player to random members of the public in the MQ. (The dates will be announced at short notice via the eSeL calendar at www.esel.at.
For the exhibition series eSeL ABC in the MQ Schauräumen in 2024, eSeL REZEPTION invites selected artists to comment on 26 terms from their art vocabulary from A to Z with their art.
These contributions are each commented on by eSeL (Lorenz Seidler) as curator and collaborator with suitable eSeL photos from the Viennese art scene, thus adding a further reflection to the reflection.
