In 2024, eSeL REZEPTION invites illustrators and artists to ‘visually’ comment on 26 vocabulary words (from A-Z) from the art world using their individual methods (and always with a pinch of humour) together with eSeL.
For decades, the language artist Jörg Piringer has been able to achieve international and interdisciplinary success with his practice as a ‘data poet’ through text works, sophisticated machines, interactive performances and installations. He is active both in the ‘visual arts’, including receiving the City of Vienna Media Art Award 2021 and the Outstanding Artist Award 2015 from the BMKÖS, and in the ‘literary world’, whether at international festivals, his participation in the Bachmann Prize 2020 or through his book projects. He focuses on the fusion of human creativity and machine intelligence by programming his own algorithms and language models that are used in his art.
His oeuvre is rounded off by his work in the field of performance and sound art, including as an active member of the Institute for Transacoustic Research and the legendary ‘Vegetable Orchestra’. With his self-programmed apps for smartphones, which are presented at various digital art festivals as well as in public spaces, Jörg Piringer pushes the boundaries of interactive and digital art.
In line with Piringer's preferences, the new ‘eSeL ABC’ in the eSeL reception from A (‘beginning’) to Z (‘zzz’) also includes abbreviations commonly used on the internet, as well as critical aspects from ‘T...rolle’ to ‘M...onetarisation’ in the art business to ‘S...prache’.
Piringer works with a wide variety of media and methods. His (language) artworks, often produced with machine support, address specific conditions of ‘D...aten’ or general pressures such as ‘B...etriebskosten’, ‘F...ake’ or false ‘V...ersprechen’ - and at the same time serve as the best practical examples of interdisciplinary work in the various art businesses and methods and techniques that enable a practice that is as idiosyncratic as it is outstanding.
Jörg Piringer was born in 1974 and lives in Vienna. He is a member of the Institute for
transacoustic research and of the Gemüseorchester. In his artistic work he moves in the interstices of language art, music, performance and poetic software, where he creates innovative forms of expression that combine these disciplines in a unique way.
