Cesare Pietroiusti: Non-Functional Thoughts
ART
Talk with Cesare Pietroiusti and Luca Lo Pinto
Cesare Pietroiusti (* 1955) is an Italian artist living in Rome whose conceptual artistic practice is of great influence on a younger generation. His study of psychology has led him to an intense engagement with paradoxical situations that hide in common relationships and in ordinary acts. The economic dimension of art, that is, the role of money or the signature of the author as a guarantee for the value of a work of art is also important to Pietroiusti. In 1997, he first published his booklet Non-Functional Thoughts, which lists almost one hundred pointless, surprising or incongruous ideas that can be realized by the readers as small-scale art projects. In times of increasing focus on efficiency in all areas of life, Non-Functional Thoughtsalso serves as a pamphlet for a playful as well as critically reflected exchange between individuals.
„Ask a sample of 100 people to show you something which is certainly not art.“
Grazer Kunstverein will publish a new bi-lingual (German / English) edition of Non-Functional Thoughts (Mark Pezinger Verlag) this summer.
