Impulstanz 2019: PETER STAMER (AT/DE) & FRANK WILLENS (DE/US) - IN THE PENAL COLONY

How this magnificent machine become so neglected? What an achievement in punishment technology set up on the island of exiles! And now? With a new commander, the old glory has faded. It’s barely possible to get spare parts anymore for this unique apparatus that kills the convicts only after it has written their offences into their flesh. Yes, a monstrous quality runs through Franz Kafka’s story In the Penal Colony, a parable about law, justice, power and morality. Over the course of the festival, Peter Stamer (director) and dancer Frank Willens (solo performer) will create this famous text as a monologue in English. The architectural machinery of mumok will serve the artists as the “island” setting during their two-week residency, with detours to the Vertigo and Pattern and Decoration exhibitions. The ImPulsTanz audience can attend the work in progress on two occasions.
