Location:

Talk with Nicolaus Schafhausen

Susanne Pfeffer is director of the museum Fridericianum in Kassel, designated director of the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt, and curator of the German Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale. She will talk about the Fridericianum and its unique position being one of the first museums in Europe and the center of documenta, which since 1955 takes place every five years.

In her talk, Susanne Pfeffer will also deal with international large-scale projects, such as the Venice Biennale, where she curated this year’s German Pavilion which has been awarded the Golden Lion for national pavilion. As a point of departure to talk about contemporary art as a reflection of real political conditions she takes the work of artist Anne Imhof, who will exhibit at the German Pavilion and whom Susanne Pfeffer attests that she encounters “the brutality of our time with harsh realism”.

The talk is part of a series of talks that will be held under the motto art history today. Art history is based on the assumption that scholarly reception and interpretation as such constitute activities tied to their historical context. Therefore, to look at visual art from a current point of view inevitably entails the superimposition of a contemporary perspective on a historical practice. The series of talks attempts to radicalize this view: What interests us today and why?
