Concepts of the public and public space in the art of Eastern and Southeastern European countries

For a long time, artists who had not received much institutional support and had no market in their respective countries, made transparent the different processes of politicization of art in their production forms. The examination of "public space" as well as its defining power relations, play an implicit and explicit role in their work. In many cases, a critical entanglement of the personal and the intimate with the symbolic-political lead to constitute new forms of publicity. The lecture presents examples from both the socialist era and the decades after 1989, in which younger generations formulate their criticisms of the post-socialist changes and upheavals.

Silvia Eiblmayr, Dr. phil., works as a curator for contemporary art and lives in Vienna.

From 1998–2008 she was director of the Galerie im Taxispalais in Innsbruck, and from 1993–1995 director of the Salzburger Kunstverein. In 2009 she was commissary for the Austrian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale together with Valie Export. She is author and publisher of numerous texts and publications on contemporary art and published Die Frau als Bild. der weibliche Körper in der Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts, Reimer Verlag, Berlin, 1993/2003.

The lecture is part of a series of talks that will be held under the motto art history today. Art history is based on the assumption that scholarly reception and interpretation as such constitute activities tied to their historical context. Therefore, to look at visual art from a current point of view inevitably entails the superimposition of a contemporary perspective on a historical practice. The series of talks attempts to radicalize this view: What interests us today and why?
