Family Portraits is a collection of self-portraits taken during the travels of the artists and their two children to idyllic panoramic locations around the world. All are clad in full-body suits that reflect the light of the flash back into the camera lens, rendering each family constellation anonymous by blurring away individual impressions. Here we simultaneously experience presence and absence of the individuals in the photographs –- they become radiant phantoms waiting to pass into another dimension. The role of nature as a permanent source of idealization remains untouched.
In their work, INKA & NICLAS explored our contemporary perception of nature through the medium of photography. Our conception of desirable landscapes around the world has been made possible not only through travel to enchanting places, but also through our consumption of nature through technology. Through the groups of people, they place in the diverse exotic landscapes, viewed through camera lenses and digital screens, we are able to experience nature firsthand, validating our own existence.
