On 13th July, ImPulsTanz – Vienna International Dance Festival will enter the stage – which can also be a museum. And so, as a taste for what’s to come, the opening of the Jan Fabre. STIGMATA – Actions & Performances 1976–2016 exhibition will take place at the Leopold Museum tonight in the presence of the artist himself. Until 13th August, the festival will present international and Austrian dance and performance highlights and will bring together what belongs together: theater and film amongst others or something entirely new – dance and pommes frites!

ImPulsTanz will begin the month-long festival with a bit of fire and spice: In the solo I am a Mistake, the Flemish all-around artist Jan Fabre will celebrate the melting of two bodies together with a “real” Austrian woman – whilst surrounded by Klimt and Schiele in the Leopold Museum. This spectacle can only be seen once and the exhibition STIGMATA – Actions & Performances 1976–2016 on Fabre’s 40 years worth of solo performance art – encapsulated by 800 objects and curated by Germano Celant – will greatly enrich it all. Only a few days afterwards, the director will move into the Volkstheater to premiere his piece Belgian Rules / Belgium Rules. From 18th July onwards, he will make a splash with his 15-strong ensemble and a critical declaration of love to his home country Belgium: 150 kg pommes frites have already been pre-ordered. Let them rain! No sooner than 14th July, the second day of the festival, audiences can expect a highlight of this year’s ImPulsTanz because Michael Laub, the “Godfather of Post-dramatic Theater”, will present his ode to waiting at the Akademietheater. His 17 young, international performers are stranded in and forced to wait in a hotel lobby in Fassbinder, Faust and the Animists. Vanity, hatred and intrigue spin the web of the story that is interspersed with Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s film Beware of a Holy Whore and dance numbers involving the Madison. An encounter of film and theater that will amaze.

A further highlight of the first festival week is Liz King’s premiere of Out of Life. Not only because five of the dancers fully surrender to dance and its inner structures as an art of movement but also because Liz King will be on stage herself – and by that stage, the stage in the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna not far from the beautiful spaces of the Odeon theater is meant. It is there that the Grande Dame of Dance Catherine Diverrès will flower out in her two solos in honor of two great men. In Stance II, she will bring to life the voice of the Italian director and poet Pier Paolo Pasolini. And in Ô Senseï, she will perform an expressive and highly atmospheric homage, surrounded by ghosts in videos and their voices, to the eminent Butoh master Kazuo Ohno, to whom Takao Kawaguchi is devoting an exhibition in the very same place. Ghosts, or rather, virtual ghosts of nature, are not far away either in the Latvian artist Elina Maligina’s piece. In her impressive video installation at the Leopold Museum that fill up space titled The development of interdependence, a group of women come closer and closer towards the audience and Elina Maligina from the edge of the forest – she herself will be performing amidst beautiful and eerie images for eight hours.

Attention! On 16th July, the Austrian performance trio Costas Kekis, Anna Prokopová and Petr Ochvat will be the first to perform in the [8:tension] Young Choreographers’ Series. In It beats soft in the veins, bodies and voices meet upon the dances and language of the three charming dancers, which will make the space vibrate.

In the weeks after, ImPulsTanz will continue with more than 60 great productions by Germaine Acogny, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Dada Masilo, Amanda Piña & Daniel Zimmermann, Wim Vandekeybus, Superamas, Samira Elagoz, Mathilde Monnier & La Ribot, amongst others.

On 13th July, the first day of the festival, the festival lounge at the Burgtheater Vestibül celebrate its opening with the brilliant Mavi Phoenix who will bring the heat. Free admission!
