Stefan Srb
leafthief / Mi’pu’mi Games
The graphics race is over. Independently developed games meet their big AAA brothers on eye level at events like BAFTA or the Game Developer’s Choice Awards. These days, no one seems to know what a game has to be, or look, or feel like. Yet everyone seems to know what they’re not supposed to be. It’s a big, confusing mess – and the best time to start making games, also in Austria. Who develops independent games in Austria? How successful are they? How do they survive? Where can I go to if I want to be part of this scene?
This talk will share a broad overview of the Austrian developer scene, yet another perspective on what “indie” is and hopefully enough motivation to get us all off our asses and start making games already.
Biography
Stefan “leafthief” Srb has been making games since 2011 (that’s the official date). After studying Digital Arts at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria he joined Viennese game development studio Mi’pu’mi Games where he worked on titles like “Hitman HD: Trilogy”, “Anno: Build and Empire” and most recently their very first own, independently published, IP: “The Lion’s Song”, which originated in one of Stefan’s privately developed games. By night he becomes “leafthief”, maker of independent games, partaker in game jams and Créateur du pixel art. As “leafthief” he makes character-driven, mostly narrative, games. Among them experiences about inspiration, beauty and dementia that have won two Vienna Content Awards in the past. When not working on games he likes to talk about working on games and did so at the A MAZE Berlin, Quo Vadis, Develop Brighton or as guest lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria.
