In 2003, SRA, the Archive of Austrian popular music, is launching “Listen to Gold,” a series serving as a musical survey of the archive. A total of 31 experts with various backgrounds panned for gold at 15 events. “Listen to Gold” revealed nodes, networks, and structures in the Austrian music scene. It resulted in a musical map that apart from zeitgeist, sales figures, and media presence identified important impulses in music making and examined their artistic value for an extended period. In the context of “Listen to Gold Europe” in 2011, musicians with migration backgrounds analyzed the SRA collection. Sound and space often lead to
deep-seated hearing patterns, and this aspect was totally eliminated by the fact that the reviewers came from elsewhere. In “Listen to Gold World”, SRA’s contribution to the “MQ Summer of Sounds”, the sound research is shifting to a global perspective.
The SRA archive lists works by many artists with migration backgrounds, including Fatima Spar, Rebekka Bakken, Peter Rehberg, Krzysztof Dobrek, Jack Grunsky, Hans Theessink, John Norman, Pamelia Kurstin and Maja Osojnik. They are included in the SRA archive because they shifted their musical focus to Austria for an extended period. We know their music well, but not the way they view and relate to Austrian musicians. As part of the “MQ Summer of Sounds” we will be exploring whether there is such a thing as “Austrian” sound. Participating experts will come from Africa, Asia, and overseas locations.
