The apparatus titled ANIMA generates the images of a real-time animation out of 21 living yeast cultures. The templates for creating the yeast images by means of UV light exposure are taken from a mobile phone video of a friend of the artist, who has passed away recently. They undergo a process of permanent transformation, continue to grow and overwrite themselves. The apparatus does visualise this process on a monitor, thereby ensuring the necessary temperature for slowing the growth of the microorganisms.
Yeasts possess a cell nucleus, which is why they show larger structural affinity with higher organisms than bacteria. Yeasts serve as important model organisms for biological and biomedical research. Eventually, bioscience will come to create just the kind of machines mechanics and computer code has done before.

Biography:
Lucas Czjzek was born and grew up in Vienna. He studied Digital Arts at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Residencies in Berlin and California. He worked as a chocolatier in high-end gastronomy for one year and currently is a filmmaker and producer for a media agency. Artistic work with biological materials since January 2013.
