With Such Stuff As We Are Made Of from 2000 and her latest work Pororoca from 2009, two guest performances at the Tanzquartier Wien give an insight into the work of Lia Rodrigues, who internationally is one of the most important South-American choreographers. Her choreographies are inspired by every day live and ther culture of Rio de Janeiro, where she not only works with her company in the de la Maré favela but has also built up an arts centre with offers in professional dance. At the same time, in her pieces, she succeeds in integrating a wider context and shifts in current history in her artistic language and questions the possible ways and forms of action in life and in art.
In Such Stuff As We Are Made Of, which was written at the same time as the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of Brazil, Lia Rodrigues remembers the brutal expulsion and murder of the original inhabitants of Brazil and the oppression of their culture, which are directly linked. Between the driving rhythms and in complete silence, the dancers formulate, in the change between solos, duets and ensemble scenes, forceful physical images and develop - in between history and memory - their choreographic narrative of human changeability.
