In Affluenza, the second part of her performance trilogy, Simone Carneiro drew parallels to the creation and bursting of speculative bubbles. Inspired by economic codes, the concept of expectations and the current financial turmoil, she presented an installation consisting of the finance pages of a variety of Austrian newspapers.

The paper walls of the installation were filled by a processual performance whereby the artist painted the inside space, visible to the spectator by means of cameras and monitors. The turning point was reached when the paper bubble is ripped apart leaving a number of painted paper shreds reminding us of better times. As an allusion to units of ownership in financial assets, the resulting paper shreds represent shares, that is, separate entities comprising a bigger whole.

Simone Carneiro is an Austro-Brazilian cross-media artist living and working in Vienna. Having studied painting and graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, she mixes various elements and processes ranging from painting and collage to performances, video, film, animation and installation.

Her interest lies in continuously integrating different influences and experimenting with different media, their interaction and processes on various levels and in different environments. To date her work has been shown in public spaces, as well as at media festivals, theatres and museums mainly in Austria and Brazil.
