With the dissolution of the socialist economic system in former Yugoslavia and Albania informal building is emerging in the western Balkans that represents an entirely new form of urbanisation. This poses the question as to the extent to which the pattern of these urban remodellings indicates a future development of the European town. The exhibition presents approaches taken by architects, urbanists and activists to these rapid processes of urban transformation, exemplified by projects in Belgrade, Zagreb, Kotor, Prishtina, Tirana, Sofia and Bukarest. The exceptional but little known buildings of modern socialist Yugoslavia are positioned in a dialogue with these rapid processes of urban transformation.

The exhibition Balkanology. New Architecture and Urban Phenomena in Southeast Europe opens up a new arena, casting light on the little known architecture of post-socialism along with the result of unregulated, uncontrolled urban development in the states of southeast Europe. The focus of the exhibition is on the most recent socio-political changes and their impact on architecture and urban development.

An exhibition in cooperation with the S AM - Schweizerisches Architekturmuseum, Basel
