Alan Butler's work explores the materiality of media and technologically mediated realities. His subject often ties together the cultural dogma to algorithmic modes of living and working. Educated at LaSalle College of the Arts, Singapore (MFA, 2009), and the National College of Art and Design, Dublin (BAFA, 2004).

In 2021, he is a co-curator of Ireland’s national pavilion at Venice Architecture Biennale 2021, and producing a permanent public sculpture for the city of Dublin. His work has been featured in over 150 exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world. These have included: Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland; Currier Museum of Art, NH, USA; Muzeum Sztuki, Lodz, Poland; Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, Perth, Australia; Visual Carlow, Ireland; Malmö Fotobiennal, Sweden; Solstice Art Centre, Ireland; The Akron Art Museum, Ohio, USA; BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, UK; Transfer Gallery, New York; C/O Berlin, Germany; FACT, Liverpool, England; Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; Les Rencontres d'Arles, France.

His work is in the collections of IMMA - the Irish Museum of Modern Art, The National Gallery of Ireland, The Office of Public Works, Ireland, The Arts Council of Ireland, and Trinity College Dublin.

His work is represented by Green On Red Gallery, Ireland.

“For the Q21 residency, I will be exploring the materiality of digital objects from the history of computer generated simulation technologies and video game worlds. Primarily the production will happen through photographic and sculptural media. This will involve experimentation with machine learning algorithms and traditional photo-chemical techniques.”
